What is shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing hands-on therapy originating from Japan. It uses a foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians and acupressure points to diagnose and treat a range of ailments.
Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that the health and well-being of our bodies is dependent on the free flow of the body’s energy or Ki. The free flow of Ki can be disrupted by a number of causes such as physical ailments and emotional states. Pain and illness are the result when Ki is not flowing smoothly around the body.
Through this framework shiatsu not only works on the physical body, it also connects with the spiritual, emotional and psychological aspects of our well-being. Shiatsu, meaning “finger-pressure”, uses the meridians and acupressure points around the body encouraging the Ki to move more freely by connecting with areas which are depleted or tense.

Shiatsu can help with a wide range of acute conditions and chronic conditions. It may help when treating headaches, relieving backache and sciatica, managing colitis and fibromyalgia symptoms, to name a few.
ABOUT ME

I grew up in Banchory and moved to Glasgow to study accountancy. I worked as an accountant in Glasgow for a few years before moving back to the North-East to work in Aberdeen.
My own health problems introduced me to the wonders of Chinese Medicine in 2016. After suffering with chronic migraines for a number of years and becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the side effects of the medications I was taking, I turned to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shiatsu, acupuncture and herbs provided me with a foundation to my journey to recovery and now I am migraine free!
I began studying shiatsu in 2017 and was instantly fascinated by it. In 2018 I made the decision to move away from accountancy so that I can help others through shiatsu. I qualified as a shiatsu practitioner in 2019 and I am a member of the Shiatsu Society (UK).
What to expect
I have a treatment room set up at my home in Banchory. Treatments are usually carried out on a futon on the floor. Unlike other types of massage, shiatsu is done through clothing.

Treatments are normally carried out on a futon on the floor. However, your comfort is really important so if mobility is an issue there are alternatives to a futon such as a massage chair. If you think lying on the floor will be an issue please let me know when you book the appointment and we can make other arrangements.

Shiatsu activates acupressure points and connects with the Ki using thumbs, palms and elbows. Stretches and joint rotations may also be used if appropriate.
On the day please wear warm, comfortable clothes.

Treatments are normally 1 hour.
Initial appointments are 60 - 75 minutes so I can take a detailed case history of your condition. This will help me to build an impression of your ailment, sometimes unrelated symptoms can be connected.
